I have logged on a I am desperate. My mum who j care for suffered schizophrenia. She recently had a fall and became unwell and now she needs help with everything in g. She is not sleeping and is getting up ever 2-3 hours and there is a risk of her injuring herself. In addition every time she gets up she smiles and I am petrified she will cause a fire as her brain does not appear to be functioning properly and she forgets to inhale the cigarette. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions. Thanks
There needs to be an urgent assessment by Social Services. Contact the adult care team or older people team. This depends on Mum’s age.

And if you haven’t had one for yourself (carers assessment). They can be carried out together.
You can call at weekends 24 x 7 even if you only leave a phone message. Keep a note of when you made contact.

Do you have plenty of smoke alarms. I have one in most rooms. You can also get them that link together and that’s a longer term plan perhaps. A twin pack can be bought cheaply in places like B and M and Home Bargains and large supermarkets if you can get out or someone else can.
In the winter one year when our heating broke the fire brigade brought us out electric heaters to borrow within the hour. They might well help you out with smoke alarms. You can only ask. If social services can’t help you today I would ring your local fire station. It will do no harm to ring! They were incredibly helpful to us and very quick.

How to get a free fire alarm
To get a free fire alarm installed in your home, you’ll first need to book a so-called Safe and Well visit, also known as Home Fire Risk Assessments or Home Fire Safety Checks.
The visits are carried out for free by all of the fire services we checked with. To find your local one, simply Google your area as well as “fire service”.
You’ll need to book in an appointment either by phone or through an online form.
The length of the visit can vary, but you should expect it to take up to an hour.
The visit is usually done by a serving fireman in uniform, and if your little ones are lucky, they’ll come in the fire engine too.
If they find that you need to have fire alarms installed, they’ll put them up for free during their visit.
