Hey! Not sure if I’m posting in the right place but what it is I’m wondering if I’m able to claim SSP and carers allowance together as I’m unable to do my job at the minute as I’m unwell and they are going to apply for SSP? But I care for my little sister full time which I’m still able to do and do? Will this affect my carers? Thanks Amy
If your little sister is in receipt of one the benefits mentioned in the link below then you could be eligible for Carers allowance, but other conditions also apply with regard to your own earnings and number of hours of caring.
Is your sister disabled?
Hello Amy, welcome to the forum.
Call our helpline on 0808 808 7777 from Monday to Friday, 9am – 6pm or email advice@carersuk.org They’ll be able to advise you on what you’re entitled to claim for .
Best wishes
Jane
I already get carers as I care for her so, I rang the helpline and they didn’t know and was asked to post here to see if anyone else is in a similar situation, I’m only part time but can’t do the job at the moment so was querying how it would work if you can get SSP while claiming carers as il still be caring for her
The cynic in me says that the official line would be that if you are off work due to illness then you can’t be caring for someone for 35 hours per week.
How much is the SSP? Will it top the earnings limit in the link in my previous post?
I get that but the caring and using a machine is completely different and I will probably get something like £80 or lower with me earning only 104 a week as I do 12 hours. A kind lady on the phone said she don’t see a problem aslong as I’m not over earning which I’m not:) so idk how it works, I’m not even sure if I’m entitled to SSP because I know for SSP you have to earn 120 and over a week and I don’t
Hi Amy,
To be entitled to sick pay;
If the worker earns above £118 per week, have been with the company for more than 3 months, and become ill for 4 or more days in a row, they’re eligible. … The amount of SSP a worker should be paid is £94.25 per week, and they’ll get this for up to 28 weeks.
Re calculating sick pay if you are part time;
To calculate SSP, the weekly rate (£94.25) is divided by the number of qualifying days in a week and multiplied by the number of days for which an employee is entitled to. … As an employer, you can choose to offer more than SSP to your employees as part of their benefits package.
Therefore, I don’t think you are entitled to it, but you could ask your employer anyway. As you won’t be over the earning limit I don’t see why you couldn’t carry on claiming carers allowance. However if you are unsure, you could ring the Citizen’s Advice Bureau or the DWP to double check.

How old is your sister? Are you her full time carer?
If she is disabled, have Social Services done a Needs Assessment for her, and a Carers Assessment for you?
